Background Information
Media is everywhere around us. Everywhere we look there are advertisements. Magazines, commercials, billboards, newspapers, and TV shows all feature ads for products or ideas. There has been research done about the persuasion used in advertisements that psychologically affects society and convinces them to buy the products. There have also been studies that reveal how stores position products to cause buyers to purchase items that they never intended on getting. But there is another major issue in the media that is affecting our society. Media is changing the way we view ourselves. In in all ads, movies, television shows, etc., the models or characters are "ideal". They are figuratively "perfect" and have the best of everything. This common perfection of all media figures has caused the citizens in our world to create an unrealistic standard for themselves. Since women in the media are portrayed with extreme thinness, flawless skin, beautiful hair, and other elements of perfection in their bodies, our world has created the notion that this is the expectation or standard that all women should be.
Women these days strive endlessly to be like the women they see in the media. They go to extremes trying to be perfect like the models, but what they don't realize or consider is that nobody is perfect. What everybody sees in advertisements and movies are flawless people, but perfection literally cannot be achieved. The reason that all the models and characters in the media have no errors in their appearance is due to the technology of picture editing. Advertising photos are edited in all the ways you can imagine, to make the woman in the picture look skinnier, with more perfect skin and more voluminous hair. The editing done in the media has caused women across the globe to attempt to change their bodies and try to turn it into an unrealistic standard. The media and photo editing has caused all women to try to be perfect, sometimes even harming themselves in the process, all in the effort to have a body like the ones they see in the media, an impossible to achieve goal.
